Childbirth Choices :: Choosing a Doula

What is a Doula? | Doula Research | TBN Doulas

With several doulas available in our area, how should you choose the one that is best for you? It’s best to speak with several doulas by phone, getting a sense of their personality, training, philosophy, and availability for your due date. Then, set up meetings with a few doulas who are available for your birth and whose philosophy seems to match your own. When you meet with a doula in person, pay close attention to how you feel in her presence—since your comfort level with your doula will be a key factor in your satisfaction with her service. While the doula’s experience and training is very important, your comfort with her may be even more important—so don’t write off a new doula if you really feel that you “click” with her!

This list of questions, developed by DONA International, one certifying body for doulas, can aid you in your doula selection process.
